Endemic animals of Quintana Roo: The Coati

Mexico is one of the richest countries talking about flora and fauna, which is possible thanks to the different ecosystems it boasts. Quintana Roo is located southeast of Mexico and it has an excellent tropical weather that allows amazing species of plants and animals to grow and live in perfect harmony.

This time at Bekare Transfers we will introduce you to one of its most adorable inhabitants, the Coati (Nasua Naríca), an omnivorous mammal that can be found in many countries of America. Its name means “long nose” and it’s a very friendly animal that lives in packs in order to take care of each other, and loves humid tropical climates.

They build comfortable nests in the trees where they put their babies after 70 days of gestation, to keep them safe and feed them. Mating season is from January to March, it is the only moment in which male coatis live with the females and their offspring, the rest of the year males live alone. They have a very powerful sense of smell and can find buried food with their long nose.

On your next trip to Cancun and the Riviera Maya, you may encounter one or maybe a family of these nice creatures while taking a walk around the jungle or even near your hotel. If you see them say hello, take a picture of them and let them continue their way. Enjoy your vacations and in the meantime help us taking care of their habitat.
