Paseo Montejo Merida

Paseo Montejo

Named after Francisco Montejo, the founder of the city, Paseo Montejo is the most important avenue in Merida. It begins in Barrio Santa Ana, passing by Downtown Merida and ending in Puerto Progreso, Yucatan. Once there you will enjoy the beautiful view of French-style boulevards, beautiful big trees, mansions and small palaces in both sides of the road.

 

Great Maya Museum Merida

 

Gran Museo del Mundo Maya (Great Museum of the Mayan World)
It is located next to the Centro de Convenciones Yucatán Siglo XXI and was first opened to the public on September 24th, 2012. It has 4 permanent exhibition halls and 2 temporary ones, showing around 800 archaeological pieces from the Museo Regional de Antropología de Yucatán. The architecture of the building is based on the Ceiba tree, sacred to the maya people.

 

Yucatan Cathedral

 

Yucatan Cathedral
This is the most ancient cathedral in Mexico and is dedicated to San Ildefonso. It was the first cathedral built in the continental America. The construction works of this master piece began in 1562 and ended in 1598 under the authorization of Papa Pio IV. Visit this beautiful art work and discover its history, written all over its walls and hallways.

 

Canton Palace Merida

Palacio Cantón (Canton Palace)
Built from 1904 to 1911 under the government of Francisco Cantón Rosado, and being its residence until he died in 1917. After many years and the different uses it was given, it is nowadays, the headquarters of the Museo Regional de Antropología “Palacio Cantón”. It boasts an amazing eclectic French architecture designed by the Italian architect Enrico Deserti, including baroque and neoclassic elements both inside and out in the façade carried out by the great artist and sculptor Michele Giacomino.
