Celestun, home of the flamingo

celestun-yucatan-mexicoCelestun is an ecotouristic 59, 139 acre paradise in Yucatan Peninsula. Its stunning landscapes are part of the world heritage and its home for hundreds of flora and fauna species. When visiting Celestun, you will be able to practice scuba and snorkel, visit the Cambay spring, and finally the beautiful corner of the pink flamingos, the only population in North America. These beautiful animals are the ones with the brightest pink color, due to the concentration of carotene in the water.

To the east, you will find the “Real de Salinas”, ancient monopoly of sal extraction. It also holds the petrified woods of Tampetén and Punta Ninum, home for miniature shrimps and clams.

In the ecosystem, there is a great diversity of flora and fauna, like the ducks that migrate from Canada during winter time, a great variety of fish, pelicans, egrets and gooneys. There are also 234 different species of mammals like jaguars, monkeys, turtles, crocodiles and others, considered endangered species.

The population of Celestun has always been dedicated to fishing and salt exploitation.
